Unexpected Signs as Reminders of Love

Let’s talk about signs…

This is what gets all of us through the horrendous pain of missing our girl.

I am part of a group of parents called ‘Shining Light Parents’, who choose to believe and learn about how our loved ones stay very close. Each week, there is a “sign of the week” assigned, and it is incredible how our children show up for us.

I never say the sign out loud, and I never tell anyone, but the sign always, in the most interesting ways, comes through. Ruby often uses people, or she shares a special message through the sign of the week.

In my mind, I simply say, “Okay Ruby…send me the sign, my love.

One time, the sign of the week was an octopus. 🐙

My sister and I were on the phone when, for some very strange, she started talking about an octopus. I laughed so hard. Then I told her. We were both so proud of Ruby.

Another time, the sign of the week was an angel.🪽

Again, she used my sister. Arlene had received a beautiful review on her Google business profile. She rarely ever sends me screenshots, but for some reason, she sent this one. And yup, you guessed it…in the review, she was referred to as “an angel on earth.”

When I read that, my heart burst. She used Auntie again for the sign of the week, letting us both know we’re on the right path and that she’s so proud of us.

This week, the sign of the week is a mushroom. 🍄‍🟫

Okay…mushroom. Interesting.

So I did my thing. I asked for the sign in my mind. I told no one. And I did so just early this morning.

Later, I opened Facebook and instantly landed on an ad for a purse (I love purses…I have too many, so of course, I will pay attention to the ad). And the shade of this purse?

You guessed it—mushroom.

Wow…. Just, wow!

Somehow, we keep this line of communication open. It’s different. It doesn’t remove the pain of missing them…but it gives us hope.

This beautiful group of Shining Light Parents has saved me over and over again. The stories are incredible. The hope that’s instilled is precious. And these little signs?

They are absolutely priceless.

Maybe the signs aren’t meant to take the pain away.

Maybe they’re just little reminders that love doesn’t disappear, that connection doesn’t end, and that we’re never walking this path alone.

And on the days when the missing feels especially heavy, these small, unexpected moments— an octopus, an angel, a mushroom—become tiny whispers of comfort.

They remind me that Ruby is still near.

Still cheering us on.

Still shining her light.

And sometimes…that hope is everything.
