Our loved ones in Spirit cannot live our lives for us. They do not take away our choices or step in to control outcomes. But they do walk beside us and support us. They love us in a way that continues, even after they are no longer here in the physical world.
Recently, my niece had one of these moments, and with her permission, I want to share it with you.
My niece’s story
My niece has always had a beautiful connection to Spirit. She understands, in her own quiet way, that love continues. One of the souls she feels closest to is my daughter, her cousin, Ruby. Their bond did not end when Ruby left this world. It simply changed into something deeper and still so real.
On one of the most important days of her school career, she walked into an exam. She was prepared, she had studied, but like many of us, she still felt that pressure. Her nerves were taking over.
During the exam, she came across a question that stopped her. She was unsure and found herself going back and forth between two answers. In that moment, she did something so natural, so full of trust: Quietly, in her mind, she reached out to Ruby.

She asked for a sign. Something simple. If she was on the right track, she asked that someone cough.
And within moments, in a silent room full of students, someone did.
To anyone else, it would have meant nothing. Just a normal sound in a quiet space. But to her, it was everything. It was a reminder that she was not alone and that her big cousin was still with her.
With that, something shifted in how she felt. She became calm, grounded and, most of all, confident. She chose her answer and continued on, feeling supported in a way that cannot be described.
As a mom, this is the part that matters most to me.
Spirit did not give her the answer. Spirit did not take the challenge away. What Spirit did was stand beside her and encourage her. Her cousin in Spirit helped her trust herself.
Our loved ones in spirit help us remember who we are
That is what our loved ones do.
They remind us who we are when we forget. They wrap us in comfort when we feel unsure and unsteady. They help us steady ourselves so we can keep moving forward.
This was not about a cough in a room. It was about connection. It was about love showing up in a quiet and gentle way, exactly when it was needed.
We do not need big, overwhelming signs to know our loved ones are near. Sometimes it is the smallest things: a feeling, thought or a moment that lands so perfectly in our heart.
When we are open, when we are grounded in love, those moments find us.
Ruby continues to be part of our lives, not in the way we once knew, but in the way love always continues: through presence, connection and beautiful moments like this.
